Hello,

Thanks for being a part of our family! If you ever have any questions, be sure to contact us! We're here for you.

As a brief follow up to our last article "Should Board Members Apologize?", here is the latest twist in our scenario:

Terminated Executive Director takes out a two page color advertisement in the local newspaper extolling the "accomplishments" which took place.

This individual then speaks at the open Board of Directors meeting, virtually demanding the job back along with a two year contract. Keep in mind, this demand is made to a board that unanimously agreed to terminate the employee. A group of friends cheered and applauded when the now ex-Executive Director made his impassioned plea.

No mention is made of the 15+ employees who may have been wrongfully terminated during the Executive Directors employment.

In short, it's a mess and the community is aggravated with this organization. The strife doubtlessly hurts the organization's ability to work toward its mission, and it's the third time in five years that an Executive Director has been replaced.

What might be one lesson to take from this? If the organization hopes to continue in the future and build a good reputation, it is advisable to turn over the recruiting and hiring process to an outside firm. Unfortunately this does not answer the original question of whether the board members should apologize. In our opinion, they owe the terminated employees and the community an apology. Not doing so merely reinforces the current negative opinion of the organization.
